Checkerboard cake

That time of year has swung around again when I must acknowledge my age, and I chose to celebrate it with a checkerboard cake.

A checkerboard cake must be made as a layered cake to acheive the full effect. The flavors I picked were chocolate and vanilla. I made two layers of each flavor and, once they were completely cooled, cut them into rings as evenly as possible. Then I stacked the rings, alternating flavors, and froze.

When it came time to assemble I made sure to stack the cakes in alternating fashion: layer with white on the outside, layer with black on the outside, etc.

To compliment the checkerboard inside, I did a vanilla to chocolate ombre.

My favorite part was cutting the cake to reveal the checkerboard! This style of cake looks stunning and time consuming, but it is not as hard as it looks, so if you want to create a simple but stunning cake, give it a shot!
