It all started when my sister forgot to tell me what her cake should look like. I asked her what she ‘wanted’ the cake to be …she assumed I was talking about flavor, and said lemon or vanilla. So I decided since her birthday falls in January, and it is always horrendously snowy this time of year, to surprise her with a snow storm or winter wonderland themed cake.
Of the two flavor options, I picked lemon. The cake was a simple lemon chiffon. Once covered in lemon frosting with a piped border around the bottom, it was ready to be decorated. The first step was to build a cabin. This I made from graham crackers and white chocolate. After this was placed on the cake, I added pine green bits as trees and logs, and white chocolate dipped peanut butter crackers and little hills. Then I added blue dyed chocolate as a lake and traced skating marks across it. The entire creation was then dusted with powdered sugar to create a ‘snowing’ effect. In a few places, such as the skating tracks, I traced the sugar away with a toothpick.

I encourage you to also try this more creative way of cake decor. You could also do winter themed, or expirement with your own look.
This is so creative! What type of frosting did you use? I can never get mine to be that smooth.
I used whipped cream frosting. In terms of smoothness the key is to spin the cake, preferably on a turn table, as you hold an offset spatula or scraper against the side.
